From A-League Heat to Lakeside Heights: My Global Coaching Odyssey
From Auckland to Perth, across the vast expanses of the A-League, and now to the stunning shores of Lake Neuchâtel – football remains the ultimate adventure.
As a coach with international experience, I’ve learned to spot the shifting tides early. My goal is always to spark dynamics within a team, sometimes even to provoke them. It’s fascinating to watch how individuals react when pushed out of their ‘comfort zone’. Everyone loves the theory, but the practice is where the real work happens. I prefer to anticipate disruption, nip negative energy in the bud, and squeeze every drop of potential out of both the people and the process.
Resilience in the A-League
Football is a balancing act between development and cold, hard results. Ideally, you get both. But in March 2026, with Macarthur FC in Sydney, we hit a wall.
After a tough exit from the Asian Champions League 2 against Bangkok United, our confidence took a hit. That lack of self-belief bled back into our A-League campaign, leading to lapses in concentration at crucial moments. Four defeats in a row followed: Jets, Wanderers, Mariners, and Victory. Emotions ran high. Were we careless, or just human?
This is when leadership is truly tested. I love these moments. There is nothing more electric than the uncertainty of a matchday. Our General Manager, Anthony Siciliano, was vital during this stretch, steadying the ship between questioning owners and a head coach under pressure. My role as assistant coach – acting as the ‘bridge’ between the squad and the boss – was equally critical.
The payoff? We broke the streak by toppling the league’s top two teams, Newcastle Jets and Auckland FC, back-to-back.
Goodbye Sydney – Welcome Neuchâtel
After an adventurous season in Australia, it’s time to say goodbye. A massive thank you to the club, the fans, and especially my friend Mile Sterjovski for the opportunity to grow personally and professionally in the heart of Australian and Asian football.
However, as one door closes, another opens on the other side of the world. Neuchâtel Xamax FCS reached out with a clear vision. They wanted me as Head Coach. The goal? A mid-term return to the Super League and a renewed focus on regional youth development.
One moment I was in Perth, staring across the Indian Ocean toward Europe. The next, I was saying: “Allons-y! Je suis ravi de travailler avec vous.” I said yes.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth. Auckland, Wellington. Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing, Bangkok. My first coaching chapter outside of Europe was a whirlwind. I loved every minute.
Goodbye Australia, Bienvenue en Suisse.
